Osteopathy is...

a manual therapy developed by American doctor Andrew Taylor Still in the late 1800s. It is based on key principles

  • The body is a unit, with all parts inter-related, including mind, body and spirit
  • The body has the capacity to heal itself given the correct environment
  • Structure and function are reciprocally inter-related, meaning that if something does not have the correct form, it will not work properly and vice versa
  • Through these principles, osteopaths work with patients to encourage full function of the whole body, including muscles, bones, ligaments, connective tissues, nerves and blood vessels. Treatment does not involve surgery or medication. Instead, treatments typically involve a combination of soft tissue treatments (including massage), joint mobilisation and adjustments. Exercises and other forms of advice may also be prescribed to provide longer effects of treatment.

Common conditions that osteopaths typically treat include general aches and pains, lower back pain, Sciatica, Osteoarthritis, rheumatic pain, neck pain, headaches and migraines, Frozen Shoulder, Tennis Elbow, circulatory and digestive problems, neuralgia, Fibromyalgia and minor sports injuries. It's a common misconception that osteopaths just treat lower back pain!

    Background

After working with disabled children and children with learning and behavioural problems, Lauren first came to Osteopathy through a dance-related injury. Inspired by the treatment she had received, Lauren went on to study for a Masters degree in Osteopathy at Oxford Brookes University and qualified in 2012. During her time here, she completed a research project on breathing disorders and lower back pain and treated many patients with various complex conditions and medical histories.

Lauren has worked at practices in Kent, West Sussex and Surrey, before setting up her own practice working from home and being mobile. She has completed courses in First Aid, Hypermobility and Performing Arts and Clinical Pilates. Although she treats every type of patient, these courses have enabled her to specialise in treating people from a performing arts background, sports people and pregnant women. Using the above qualification, Lauren is also a Clinical Pilates instructor and uses this to help patients gain long-term pain relief and management strategies.
